Why Do I Get So Hungry Before My Period?
Our periods bring up several different symptoms we’ve come to know and love (or hate). There’s mood swings, fatigue, butt cramps (our personal favorite), and food cravings that we just can’t ever seem to satisfy! Don’t shame yourself for wanting to eat more before or during your period - your body just might need it!
Why Do I Crave More?
Just like our ENTIRE menstrual cycle, blame it on the hormones! Before our period, estrogen levels rise. When estrogen levels rise, so do our cortisol levels (AKA, the stress hormone)! When our bodies are put through more stress, we can experience PMS symptoms and a high metabolic stimulation. In simpler terms, more stress = more appetite.
During our PMS, or luteal stage, our serotonin levels drop. Serotonin is responsible for making us feel happy (or not happy). Eating foods that are high in carbohydrates can actually increase serotonin levels and make us feel happier, which makes our body crave more sweets and carbs!!
Should I Indulge in My Cravings?
Yes… and no (but mostly yes). Your body is responding to the drastic hormonal changes, and listening to your body is vital during this time. However, it’s also important to properly nourish your body during this time as well.
Cravings can start around 7-10 days before your period. Indulging into those cravings 24/7 during PMS may not always make us feel better physically. Eating foods that are high in carbs, sugars, or salt can make us feel more fatigued and bloated. Here’s a spoiler - you can cure cravings with healthier alternatives!
If You’re Craving…
Carbs
Pasta, chips, bread, pastries, oh my! Carbs may seem comforting, however, there are several healthier alternatives. Instead of making pasta, make a quinoa or brown rice bowl with similar ingredients!
Sugars
A go-to to cure a sweet tooth is chocolate! However, too much sugar can cause a crash. Try switching the candy bar for a smoothie, trail mix, or energy bites!
If you still reallllly want chocolate, check out our TikTok video where we make a healthy sweet alternative, using dark chocolate and raspberries!
P.S. Here's a reminder that periods typically happen once a month. If your body is craving a deep dish pizza or an ice cream sundae, it’s okay to treat yourself :)
